The painting 'Serpentine' 2013 installed at Double Tree by Hilton hotel is the second major commissioned work by Rankle & Reynolds on public view in London and features a montage of images drawn from nearby Hyde Park.
Focusing on overlaid vistas along the Serpentine lakeside the work challenges the conventionally nostalgic perception of the park as a formal landscape of historical importance and encourages the viewer to consider it as a magical place evoking a continuing and often mysterious source of natural energy within the contemporary urban environment.
'Serpentine' 2013 and the numerous related studies in oils and pigmented inkjet are crucially the first works by Rankle & Reynolds where the artists have engaged in a process incorporating both traditional oil painting and Reynold's photographic techniques on the same canvas.
